CEO Update - January 2018

Start Thinking About Nominating an Outstanding Colleague

With the New Year comes a new opportunity to recognize staff who go above and beyond in their jobs. In 2018, consider nominating a colleague for the BC Community Social Services Awards of Excellence. Nominations open in early March and include four categories — Rising Star, Hero, Leader and Legend. The awards will be presented in Vancouver on October 10 and further details on the requirements, nomination process and past winners can be found on our awards website.

Board and Panel Meetings

The Board and Panels recently met and discussed ways to address the three resolutions introduced at CSSEA’s 2017 AGM. CSSEA has taken steps to action one of the resolutions by planning a series of HR/LR training for managers at its upcoming regional sessions. The resolutions are:

From Community Living Services:
BE IT RESOLVED THAT The CSSEA Board of Directors ensure that the 2019 Provincial Collective Agreement be fully funded and the funding captures all costs.

BE IT RESOLVED THAT CSSEA be proactive in providing LR/HR ongoing training for managers at local agencies.

From General Services:
BE IT RESOLVED THAT CSSEA endeavours to secure funding to develop and implement a province-wide recruitment and retention strategy.

There was also discussion about a December 18th letter from the Minister of Finance, Carol James, to our Board Chair detailing the outcome of a Public Sector Employers’ Council Secretariat (PSEC Secretariat) consultation and recommending changes to CSSEA’s bylaws on governance. The PSEC Secretariat’s Report on Employers’ Association Governance Consultations resulted from meetings with employers’ associations and stakeholders, including with myself, our former Board Chair and Vice-Chair, who submitted their views on CSSEA’s current governance both verbally and in writing (our written submission does not form part of the report).

As a result of the ministry’s recommended changes, CSSEA has struck a committee, chaired by Deborah Joyce, Chief Executive Officer of District 69 Family Resources Association, which will determine the best course of action and how to respond.

Upcoming Bargaining, Data Collection and Education Sessions

CSSEA will be hosting a number of sessions around the province starting in March that will address 2019 collective bargaining, performance management and correction for managers (as well as other HR/LR questions during a general Q&A) and how to complete the 2018 Compensation and Employee Turnover Survey. Below are details about confirmed dates, venues and times. Members will be notified about registration as soon as it becomes available.
